Our Falcons defeated the Chargers of Kentridge High School on Friday night, 43-0, to earn their first NPSL Cascade Division victory and improve to 3-0 on the season.
Trask Rogers recovered a Chargers fumble on Kentridge’s opening drive to put the Falcons in good field position. Three plays later, Kentlake scored on a three yard pass from Brandon Mortenson to Eddie Edwards IV. Mortenson and Edwards connected again for a 20 yard TD catch and run, and the Falcons led 13-0 after the first quarter.
Kentlake opened the second quarter with 93 yard scoring drive, fueled by big plays from Mitchell Lockhart and Bryan Dye, and capped by a two yard scoring run by Trask Rogers. Bryan Dye closed out the quarter with another big play, breaking a tackle for a 45 yard catch and run for a touchdown. Kentridge had a chance to score at the end of the half, but Rogers blocked the 40 yard field goal attempt. Kentlake took a 27-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Falcons picked up where they left off in the second half. Eddie Edwards returned a punt 65 yards for his third touchdown of the night. Mortenson set up another score with a 70 yard run to the Chargers seven yard line. Tony Heimann bulldozed into the end zone to put Kentlake up 41-0 at the end of the third quarter.
Kentlake’s backups saw most of the action in the fourth quarter, with sophomore Hudson Potts taking over at quarterback. Ilyas Anjaz blocked a Kentridge punt in their end zone for a safety. Freshman linebacker Josh Ashabraner recorded a solo tackle, and freshman Mason Homolka returned a kickoff 15 yards.
The Kentlake defense was terrific all night in recording the shutout. The defensive front seven led by nose tackle Brandon Kelley and linebackers Marques Fuala’au and Tony Heimann consistently shut the door on the Kentridge running game. Trask Rogers and Brayden Laukala put constant pressure on the Charger quarterbacks.
Brandon Mortenson led the Falcons offense with 19 completions on 25 attempts for 269 yards and 3 touchdowns. Mortenson also rushed for a two point conversion, and broke a 70 yard run . Eddie Edwards scored three touchdowns, two receiving and one punt return.
Kentlake (1-0 division, 3-0 overall) will next face Kent-Meridian (1-0, 1-2 overall). The Royals got their first NPSL division victory over Hazen last Friday. The game will kickoff at 7:00 pm on Thursday night at French Field.
